In the Ancient Near East, women were generally not held in high standing. When a man wanted to let people know who he was, he would recite his lineage, always citing males, rarely women. Yet, when Matthew records Jesus' genealogy, he includes five different women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary. Aside from the scandal of having women listed in his genealogy, there is the added scandal of these women being a collection of conniving prostitutes, and foreigners! Usually, heroes of stories come from valiant stock, but not Jesus. So, what can we make of these Mothers of Jesus? What can we learn about the gospel and about the hope that we have at Christmas? Join us each Sunday from November 25 through to December 23, and join us for our Christmas Eve Service too!
